Part1: How to use a Multimeter on Laptop Motherboard.
Requirements
A Multimeter, laptop charger, laptop motherboard.
In this part one we are going to test the laptop charger using the multimeter, were are going to learn how to check if a charger is good.
Step 1: Verify the meter works
Your probes are plugged in correctly:
Black probe → COM
Red probe → VΩmA
Step 2:
Now turn the dial to:
20V DC (the left side marked V⎓ 20V)
The screen should show something like 0.00 or 1.
Step 3: Measure the charger
The charger must be plugged into the wall and powered on while you measure its voltage.
Your HP barrel plug likely has:
Outer metal barrel = negative (ground)
Inner metal sleeve = positive (~19V)
Tiny center pin = identification pin (don't worry about it yet)
Touch:
Black probe to the OUTSIDE metal barrel.
Red probe to the INSIDE metal sleeve (not the tiny center pin).
Be careful not to short them together.
A healthy HP charger should read approximately:
18V to 20V → charger is good.
0V → charger or cable is faulty.
Much lower than 18V → charger problem.
